If you use
a modem to connect to the Internet, then you are using dial up Internet
access (usually called dial up access). Your computer software automatically
dials a telephone number via your modem which passes down the telephone
cable to a modem at your ISP (Internet Service Provider). The ISP's modem
connects you to their computer which has a permanent connection (leased
line) to the Internet. So you are now connected to the Internet paying
your telephone companies charges (usually local rate).
